The Advanced Safety Officer course focuses on the role of the Safety Officer within an ICS organization and framework. Designed for previously trained and qualified ICS Safety Officers, this course explores advanced concepts beyond standard Safety Officer training. Based on audience needs, course content may be customized to address specific Safety Officer challenges and operational contexts.

Course objectives
- Review Safety Officer roles and responsibilities within the Incident Command System.
- Apply risk-benefit analysis and risk-based decision-making models to incident operations.
- Explain the Safety Officer’s involvement in Operations and Command-level decision-making.
- Identify laws and regulations related to safety in emergency response.
- Describe effective relationships between the Safety Officer and key IMT members (Command, Operations, Planning).
- Develop and manage a Safety organization, including effective use of Assistant Safety Officers.
- Prepare and deliver the Command’s Safety Message.
- Apply contingency and strategic planning concepts to safety operations.
- Demonstrate time-management strategies in dynamic incident environments.
Delivery format
Activities may include instructor-led, in-person training supported by realistic scenario-based learning, group discussion and facilitated instruction, safety planning exercises, problem-solving activities, and asynchronous activities.

Pre-requisite (required)
- Successful completion of ICS-300
- Successful completion of ICS-404 Safety Officer, or equivalent ICS Safety Officer Training
