The Logistics Section Chief (LSC) manages all support services for an incident, including facilities, communications, medical support, supplies, and personnel needs. As a member of the General Staff, the LSC ensures responders have the resources required to operate safely and effectively throughout incident operations.

Course Overview

ICS-450 prepares emergency management and response personnel for the role of Logistics Section Chief (LSC) on an Incident Management Team. The course builds on ICS fundamentals and focuses on the LSC’s duties and responsibilities, including logistical coordination, resource management, and effective section leadership.

Course objectives

  • Identify key resources and reference materials for the Logistics Section Chief position.
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of the Logistics Section and the LSC, including relationships with Unit Leaders.
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of Unit Leaders (Facilities, Ground Support, Supply, Food, Medical, and Communications) in supporting section objectives.
  • List the LSC’s priorities upon activation and explain how to implement them effectively during initial response and transition to ongoing operations.
  • Explain how to determine logistical support and service requirements for incident operations.
  • Describe how to develop a right-sized Logistics Section organization to meet incident needs.
  • Explain how the Logistics Section provides support to IMT customers and coordinates with other sections.
  • Describe the LSC’s involvement in meetings, briefings, and the Incident Action Planning (IAP) process.
  • Explain how the LSC coordinates and communicates with Command and General Staff and external partners.
  • Describe the LSC’s responsibilities for resource requesting, ordering, and managing incident resources.
  • Explain how the Logistics Section interacts with other sections regarding incident facilities and communications.
  • Identify techniques for managing personnel and demobilizing the Logistics Section.

Delivery format

Activities may include instructor-led, in-person training supported by realistic scenario-based learning, group discussion and facilitated instruction, logistics planning exercises, problem-solving activities, and asynchronous activities.

Pre-requisite

Successful completion of ICS-300 and have response experience in the Logistics Section
